LECTURE: New psychoactive substances & cannabinoids.
Besides it's stigmatisation as misused substance, cannabis can be used for a multitude of medical purposes. Medical cannabis blooms contain further cannabinoids apart from THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which also have antiemetic, neuroprotective as well as anti-inflammatory aspects besides the known analgetic and antispastic effects of THC. Spasms due to multiple sclerosis, sickness and vomiting after chemotherapy, loss of appetite due to HIV/AIDS, neuropatic pains as well as in palliative care, are well known indicators for the treatment with cannabinoids.
NPS (new psycho-active substances)
These are substances, which may have a stimulating, halluzinogenic or sedating effect. By establishing an early-warning-system (EWS), the swift identification of "new drugs" on the EU market should be guraranteed. With the help of a scientific panel the risk of new substances are evaluated and subsequently, the corresponding legal regulations should be defined by the Council of Europe. At present, more than 350 new psycho-active substances are beeing surveilled.
